In July 2022, the Statistisches Bundesamt published main causes for driver misbehavior in road traffic accidents with personal injury in Germany from 2010 to 2021. Unfortunately, the shares of driver misbehavior in road traffic have not changed significantly since 2010. Especially, misbehavior in turning, right of way, speed, wrong road use and distance have been main causes for accidents involving drivers in road traffic with personal injury since 2010.

Another study by Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft e.V. showed constellation of car driver-pedestrian as well as car driver-cyclist are the most frequent accident constellation for car accident at the 20 accident blackspots in Berlin from 2006 to 2010. By 77% car drivers caused past accidents in car driver-cyclist and by 55% in car driver-pedestrian constellation. 

While newer cars have an automated speed limit recognition integrated, the vast majority of people driving an older car are excluded from this technology. On the other hand, despite of advanced integrated software, we still face driver’s inattention leading to future accidents. 

Finally, our project goal is to provide an affordable AI-based solution with an attractive user interface for automated speed limit, traffic sign and especially person detection in order to significantly increase road safety in the long term.
